The marina is like a garage, and the number of “parking Spaces” in a given area is inversely proportional to the amount of activity space. More berths could mean more crowding.
It is particularly important to set up a reasonable layout while taking into account the unobstructed channel. At the same time, the layout of the marina is affected by the terrain and space, and different projects adopt different strategies.
1. Montenegro Port Terminal
Porto Montenegro Marina, Europe’s mainstream superyacht marina, is a comfortable and unique marina, perfect for luxury seekers. It is safely located in the UnESCO-protected Boca Bay region of Montenegro.
Layout Analysis: The port of Montenegro adopts a modular layout, consisting of several rectangles, which looks a bit like a “fish pond”, thanks to the fact that it is less affected by terrain, which is relatively rare in Europe. The berth of a rectangular pier is between 60 and 100, and the public channel is relatively spacious. It is made of concrete pier.
2. Port Vauban Terminal
The “yacht capital” of the Mediterranean, Vauban Port is one of the oldest and largest yacht ports in Europe. It is located in the charming resort of Antibes on the French Riviera, and the port of Vauban is the number one terminal by tonnage in Europe.
Layout Analysis: In fact, Vauban is one of the most “crowded” yacht ports in Europe, with 642 berths. There are about 5 berthing areas, which are composed of irregular inner bays and outer bays. For mega yachts, small and medium yachts, sailboats. Compared with the neat and uniform wharf of Montenegro Port, Vauban Port has a complex topography. The layout of the wharf maximizes the berthing space, so the public channel space is smaller.
3. Port Hercules
The largest yacht port in Monaco, this is the only deep-water port on the coast. In 2011, after the renovation, concrete floating wharf was adopted to replace the original fixed wharf. Port Hercules, based in Monte Carlo, Monaco, hosts the annual boat show, which draws yachts and industry insiders alike
Layout Analysis: The overall topography of Hercules Port is U-shaped, it covers an area of nearly 40 acres (160,000㎡), spacious water, meaning that the layout of the pier can be “whatever you want”! So even though it has 700 berths, it’s not very dense overall and the public waterways are wide.
The ratio of water area to berthing space is a direction worth thinking about, which will not be analyzed in depth here.
4. Grand Haven Marina
The Grand Haven Marina is located in Vittoriosa, Malta. It is a pier at the mouth of a narrow estuary, where Malta is famous for its food, tourism and the magical Blue Hole of Malta is located in the city.
Layout Analysis: The difference of Grand Haven Wharf is that it is built on a narrow river. The wharf is arranged according to the width of the river. Where the river is wider, the floating wharf is set longer, and the narrow place is the opposite. Maximum berthing space while maintaining the overall width of the public fairway. There are currently 240 berths in total. But limited by the river space, dock sailing, small and medium-sized yachts mostly.
5. Zea Marina
Located in Piraeus, Athens, Zea Marina is one of the finest superyacht marinas in the Mediterranean. A port with a long history.
Layout Analysis: The corn Dock looks like a chemical glassware, and the main area is a regular circle. The docks in the circular bay extend vertically, and because they are not parallel, they leave some empty space (where the arrows point). The Corn Pier has been replaced by short parallel piers to increase berths without affecting the waterway. Currently, the pier has a total of 670 berths.
